With the continuous development of technology, most people have long been accustomed to communicating with family and friends through email, WhatsApp, and other social media platforms. Correspondence by letter is regarded by many young people as an outdated practice. We are now used to messages being delivered instantly, and often wait eagerly for a reply the moment a message is sent.

However, there are still situations where we must communicate by letter. Many people, after writing their letter, suddenly realize they’ve forgotten how to properly fill it out—where to write the recipient, where to write the sender, where the address goes, what the postal code is, and how to write the address correctly. Will writing it this way cause it to be returned? Upon searching online, they’re overwhelmed by a flood of information and can’t tell which answer is correct. This article will guide you step by step on how to correctly write an envelope address.
First, clearly write your own information
At this point, many people may be confused—why do I need to write my own information when I’m sending a letter to someone else? Shouldn’t the recipient’s information be the priority? That’s a great question. When mailing a letter, the recipient’s information is indeed very important, as it determines whether they can receive your letter. But what if, due to unforeseen circumstances, the recipient is unable to receive it? The post office might return the letter to you, and that’s when your sender information becomes especially important.
- First, write your name in the top left corner.
- Then write your street address.
- Below that, write your city, state, and postal code.
Once written, it should look like this:

Next, clearly write the recipient’s information
As mentioned earlier, the recipient’s information is absolutely crucial. This step determines whether the mail carrier can correctly find the person you want to send the letter to, so be sure to confirm the recipient’s full and accurate address before writing— the more detailed, the better.
The format for writing the recipient’s information is actually quite similar to that of the sender, except it is placed in the most prominent central area of the envelope:
- First, write the recipient’s name in the center of the envelope.
- Then write the recipient’s street address.
- Below that, write the recipient’s city, state, and postal code.
And that’s it for filling out the information! Pretty simple, right? Once completed, it should look like this:

Lastly, don’t forget to attach a stamp
Although the information is filled out, you’re not done yet. You need to first go to a post office or store to buy a postage stamp. Some people might not be familiar with what a stamp is. Simply put, a stamp is like money—you purchase it and stick it on the letter, and only then will the mail carrier deliver your letter (the post office selling you the stamp is essentially them receiving your postage fee).
When purchasing, ask the clerk how many stamps you need (this depends on the weight of your letter).
Attach the stamp to the upper right corner of the envelope. Once attached, it should look like this:

Now it’s truly complete!
Drop the letter into a mailbox, and once the mail carrier sees it, they will deliver it to the person you want to send it to. Now just patiently wait for their reply!
